Chapter 6: Geography Major Landforms of the Earth
The earth is like a living organism and there is continuous movement inside it.
As a result of which two processes exist. These are:
Effect:
The internal process leads to upliftment and sinking of the earth’s surface at several places.
As a result of which two processes exist. These are:
internal process and external process.
What is meant by internal process? What are the effects of internal process?
Internal process are the mechanisms which are a result of internal forces of the earth and result in internal movement of the earth.Effect:
The internal process leads to upliftment and sinking of the earth’s surface at several places.
What is meant by external process? What are the effects of external process?
External process are the mechanisms which are a result of external forces of the earth and result in external movement of the earth.Effect:
The external process leads to the continuous wearing down and rebuilding of the land surface.
Note: The wearing away of the earth’s surface is called erosion.
Erosion is a destructive action of nature and it is balanced by the process of deposition. So, the nature destroys and rebuilds the landforms simultaneously.
Who carries out these internal and external processes?
These two processes are carried out by three agents which are:running water, ice and wind.
What are different types of landforms?
The different landforms on the basis of elevation and slope are:mountains, plateaus and plainsLet us now discuss these landforms.
What are mountains?
a) A mountain is any natural elevation of the earth’s surface with a peak or a summit.b) In some mountains, there are permanently frozen rivers of ice. They are called glaciers.
c) A continuous chain of mountains over a large area is called ‘Range’.
Some examples of mountains are:
The Himalayas, The Alps and The Andes in Asia, Europe and South America respectively.
Types of mountains:
There are three types of mountains:Fold mountains, Block mountains and the Volcanic mountains.
What is the importance of mountains?
Mountains are storehouse of water.Further they have forests which give us fuel, fodder, shelter and other products.
What is Plateau?
a) A plateau is a flat-topped table land. It is an elevated flat land.b) The Deccan plateau in India is one of the oldest plateaus.
c) Plateaus are very important as they are rich in mineral deposits.
d) Many plateaus have waterfalls. The lava plateaus have soil good for cultivation.
What are Plains?
a) Plains are low-lying and flat stretches of land.b) Plains may be extremely level, slightly rolling and undulating.
c) Plains are very fertile. They are very good for cultivation, transport and habitation.
Relation between the landforms and the people:
a) Human settlements are dependent on the types of landforms.b) As a result of which the areas which are dangerous or isolated have less habitation as compared to areas which are palm or rich in minerals.
