What is map?


A map is a representation or a drawing of earth’s surface or part of it, drawn on a flat surface according to a scale.

We all are familiar with the map. At some point or other, we all have used map. 

There are different type of maps available according to their use.


Type of maps: 


Maps are of several types like physical maps, political maps and thematic maps.

Let us study about them.


What is physical map?


Maps showing natural features of the earth are called physical maps. It is also known as relief maps.


What are political maps? 


Maps showing cities, town and villages, countries and states of the world with their boundaries are called political maps.


What are thematic maps? 


Some maps focus on specific information like rainfall map, road maps, maps of tourist places are called thematic maps. 

Now let us talk about the various components of Maps.


What are the components of maps?


There are three components of maps: -

1.distance,

2.direction and

3.symbol.

Distance is measured in terms of scale.


What is meant by the scale of map?


 Scale is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map. 

We use different scale for representation of different areas, like:

When large areas like continents or countries are to be shown on a paper, then we use a small scale. 

When a small area like your village to town in to be shown on paper, then we use a large scale map. 

On the other hand, Directions are cardinal points like North, South, East and West. 

Lastly, Symbols are certain letters, shades, colours, pictures and lines, which give us information about a limited place. 

  Note: Various other things like sketches and plan are used to draw an area of a large scale.
